Just steep the chaga in hot water until you get the desired color and potency. Chagas mild flavor is clean, earthy, woody and non-bitter. I cut the chaga mushrooms before drying to make brewing tea easier. Once its dry, its hard, brittle and difficult to cut. Most pieces have some of the extra-potent black outer rind attached to the corky, creamy-brown interior mycelium of the mushroom. Extra care is taken to keep the outer rind clean and in-tact while harvesting. Keeping the chaga clean is also made easier by the fact that it is harvested during the winter, (when the chaga is also said to be the most potent,) and the forest is frozen and blanketed in snow.
